♦ After being dispatched to the 800 block of W. Bank St. in Salisbury on several complaints of gunfire around 2:30 a.m., police became engaged in a firefight with an unknown shooter. Sources report multiple gunshots coming from an area around 815 W. Bank St. The first responding officer, forced to take cover behind a nearby building, returned fire with the shooter who soon fled the area on foot.
Neither the officer or the shooter were hit during the exchange as no signs of blood were found by investigators on the scene. A handgun was recovered in the area.
Soon Salisbury Police were joined Rowan County Sheriff Office deputies in an intensive search in the West End neighborhood around the 800 block of W. Bank St. Before long the area was flooded with the flashing lights of law enforcement vehicles and the sound of officers knocking on doors.
The shooter is described as a black male about 6 feet tall and weighing approximately 250 lbs. wearing all black clothing and having short dreadlocks.
Police arrested Edward Lamont Cathcart, 21, of 1324 A W. Horah St. for resisting officers during a search of 815 W. Bank St. He is pictured below.
