♦ Recently someone asked me about the status of rural high-speed internet availability in those difficult to reach areas of Rowan County where major cable providers (TWC, Windstream, or AT&T U-verse) are not yet running either cable or fiber. In those rural areas far from enough houses to make profit motivated cable companies interested, folks can still receive relatively high-speed satellite internet with download speeds currently running about 10 Mbps to 15 Mbps. In the not too distant future satellite providers will likely be able to boost download speeds up to 50 Mbps or more.
On the horizon are extreme wireless speeds in the vicinity of 10 gigabytes download and upload. Extreme wireless may provide underpopulated rural areas with super high-speed internet.
