♦ A two-alarm house fire broke out at 1475 Godbey Road in the County. A female renter got safely out of the single floor kit-style home. The fire began in the kitchen sometime around 9 a.m. and burned for nearly 20 minutes prior to the first firefighters arriving on the scene. Fire Departments representing Woodleaf, Locke, Cleveland. and Franklin were the first to show before backup came from Salisbury and Iredell. The fire was under control in under an hour.
The fire ate a hole in part of the roof and flames licked out of the front and rear doors. Smoke was everywhere. When the firefighters saw the danger of a roof collapse, they moved back and used their hoses to extinguish the fire. Lots of eye-stinging smoke, but that has mostly drifted away. The air smells like burnt wood. Hots spots are the focus now.
No cause of the fire yet determined. No one reported injured. The female renter is being assisted by the Hanford Dole Chapter of the American Red Cross.
