♦ In a very revealing article on NPR.Org you can find out how many crimes your police department clears. Martin Kaste writes: “Violent crime in America has been falling for two decades. That’s the good news. The bad news is, when crimes occur, they mostly go unpunished. In fact, for most major crimes, police don’t even make an arrest or identify a suspect. That’s what police call “clearing” a crime; the “clearance rate” is the percentage of offenses cleared.”
In this article is a valuable “box” where you can put the name of your city and its state to determine your city’s actual “clearance rate”. For example you could put Salisbury, N.C. into the box and afterwards compare its “clearance rate” with Concord, Mooresville, Spencer, Kannapolis, Albermarle, Apex, Cary, and so forth. Check out any city in North Carolina and kick its “clearance rate” tires. Is the local police department doing its job? Find out now. Statistics are supplied by the FBI.
