Press Release

Raleigh, NC – Sen. Tom McInnis (R-Richmond) issued the following statement Wednesday in response to his proposal to help ensure students enrolled at UNC system schools have more professors teaching their classes and is being referred to a legislative committee for more in-depth study:

“There is no substitute for a quality professor in every classroom of our state universities, and I introduced Senate Bill 593 to start the conversation on this important issue. My goal has always been to bring awareness to the problem and start the long process of effecting change.

“I have welcomed feedback from professors, students, parents and UNC system officials since the bill was filed. I look forward to continuing that dialogue and to working with the Legislative Research Commission and the UNC Board of Governors to make improvements to this proposal and ensure our students receive the high-quality education they deserve.”

This week McInnis presented a revised bill that would create standard annual teaching loads that would be differentiated to accommodate the diverse missions of the individual campuses of the UNC system. The new proposal was adopted by the Senate Education Committee and referred to the Legislative Research Commission, where it will become the basis for a study bill.
