Frieda Solis-Miller, Salisbury, N.C.

♦While Salisbury has many towering difficulties, one needing not to get swept under the carpet is the problem of the city’s schools.  The time for hiding Salisbury’s badly performing schools should have ended years ago.  Camouflaging Salisbury public school problems with superficial awards, championship golf and tennis teams, and technology awards for purchasing the most IPADs and then salting them away in a warehouse needs to end. Is there any help on the horizon for this badly performing cluster of schools because it is truly a pox on our city and its future?

Many of our children can not read and write in the upper grades.  The better students are moving out of Salisbury to attend private schools, get home schooled, go to Carson, East or just move out of the area. This educational migration is not exactly leaving the crème de la crème behind.  Parents are concerned about their children’s safety with gangs and bullying prevalent.  That two youngsters committed suicide in one school because of being bullied needs attention not covering up to protect the school-systems already poor reputation.

This READY report card is from the Rowan-Salisbury School’s website.  Note the very telling composite scores recorded in the first column of each school.  It tells us that schools within Salisbury’s boundaries are doing very badly.  This needs immediate attention and action not more expensive and dubious studies.
