Chuck Hughes, Board of Education

♦Once again, gun control becomes the call of the wild following the Arapahoe High School shooting. It is reprehensible that politicians led by Nevada’s soft spoken mouse, Harry Reid, is so shallow that he uses such tragic events to attack our second amendment rights.

It is audacious to even associate this event with gun control. It would make more sense to have Molotov cocktails outlawed or at least “controlled.” Then we would also have to outlaw or control shotguns, a hunter’s weapon that even the left, to my knowledge, has never dared to add to the arsenal of guns they want banned.

Obviously I do not know what internal security measures were in place at Arapahoe High, but the facts suggest they were either poor or nonexistent. These apparent facts support my suspicions:

  • How did this student ever get into a school building with a shotgun in hand? Had there been a one access control point in place, it is highly unlikely that the shooter would ever have gained entry.
  • Had the security officer been armed instead of a potential victim, the shooter may have been put down before he got off his first round.

Whatever the security shortcomings at this unfortunate High School, this is another event that will be reviewed for answers then followed by the promise, “We will make sure this never happens again,” a slogan used far too often, far too late in far too many tragedies.

As an R/SS Board of Education member, I salute our school system’s dedication in implementing school safety procedures. However, I urge us to never become complacent, but to remain diligent every hour of every school day because the unthinkable is often just around the corner.
