♦ “We are so trapped by our irrational fear of Alzheimer’s and dementia that we typically view them as our fate—a hopeless, genetically determined punishment of living too long that condemns us to an agonizing descent into oblivion. Do not believe it. In truth, much of dementia in old age is self-inflicted and predestined, not by genes, but by the way we live our lives.Leading researchers worldwide have discovered many ways to help keep dementia from destroying your aging brain.” Jean Carper, Medical Writer

Back on July 9th I wrote the following about the Mind Diet:

“In recent years researchers in the field of Alzheimer’s and dementia have noted the impact of diet, nutrition, lifestyle, exercise, developing purpose, interests, hobbies, learning, and friendships on Alzheimer’s and dementia. One new development is the “Mind Diet” combining the DASH Diet and the Mediterranean Diet with eating berries: Blueberries, Blackberries, Raspberries, Tart Cherries, Concord Grapes, Elderberries, and Strawberries.”

In early October one of the first books on the “Mind Diet” was released: “The Mind Diet–A Scientific Approach to Enhancing Brain Function and Helping Prevent Alzheimer’s and Dementia” by Maggie Moon, MS, RDN. I read the book and found it contained both outstanding information and a readable write up on the research supporting the Mind Diet. In short it’s a compact readable book demonstrating how to keep your mind alert and fully functioning into old age by eating the “right foods” and passing on those harmful to your brain’s health.
