♦ I am very surprised and deeply humbled after receiving a telephone call and the attached information via email this morning from the Hefner VA Medical Center. They shared that they had selected me as the 2017 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Humanitarian Award recipient for community service.
In the nearly 30 years of working in the community fighting for justice, equity and change, I have never accepted any type of award or recognition. When I was contacted a couple of weeks ago, I initially turned it down. A few people whom I trust and respect, encouraged me to accept.
I have the highest level of respect for the Military and I’m proud to be a Honorably Discharged Veteran, so this has special meaning for me.
