Dateline January 7, 2017 at 5:30 a.m. Salisbury NC, – (RFP) National Weather Service predictions were right on the money this morning. Freezing rain after darkness fell rapidly changed to 4 to 6 inches of beautiful white powdery snow which blanked Salisbury-Rowan. The temperature is 27 degrees and is expected to remain below freezing well through the weekend. Despite best efforts of DOT salt trucks, reports this morning from I-85 indicate little snow removal and patches of frozen ice beneath the snow. Competent 4 wheel drive vehicles are said to be moving gingerly at 40 m.p.h. Snow chains (who has them here anymore) are suggested.
Folks not required to drive should stay home and not hazard emergency vehicles. On the bright side, this light fluffy snow should not take down many power lines and should be great fun for the children. Readers are advised to stay home, warm and drink all that milk and eat all that bread they bought this week. BTW perfect snow for Snow Ice Cream!
Recipe for Snow Ice Cream from “GimmeSomeOven.Com”:
INGREDIENTS:
1 cup milk (any kind)
1/3 cup granulated sugar
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1 pinch salt
8 cups clean snow or shaved ice (more or less depending on the density of the snow)
optional (but strongly suggested) topping: sprinkles!
DIRECTIONS:
In a large bowl, whisk milk, sugar, vanilla and salt together until combined. Go scoop up some fresh (clean!) snow, and immediately stir it into the milk mixture until you reach your desired consistency. Top with sprinkles or other ice cream toppings if desired.
The ice cream should be fluffy and not runny, but it melts quickly, so dive in right away!”

♦ On Monday, January 2nd, my secretary was given a parking ticket for parking more than two hours in the first block of West Council Street. She thought that the facts that the adjacent courthouse was closed, virtually all businesses were closed, there were only a couple of cars parked on the entire block, and it was raining, meant that she could flagrantly break the law. She thought the purpose of the two hour parking restriction was to keep people from tying up parking places all day. Foolish her! As the parking officer clearly knew, the purpose of the two hour restriction is to pay for Fibrant $5.00 at a time. After all, since when has Salisbury’s goals included making downtown a welcoming environment for businesses paying rent such as my law office?
This officer’s diligence is being wasted. With all the unsolved murders in Salisbury, whether or not he or she is legally qualified to wear a badge, the enforcement officer clearly needs to be transferred to investigating these matters. Let others call the enforcement officer a parking Nazi, I think he or she is a hero.
