♦ A year ago today, I got a call from a family member that a breaking and entering burglary was going on at a home on the West End. I hurriedly left a lunch and rushed over to the home. This was the scene when I arrived-a 15 and 18 year old in handcuffs.
The two were caught breaking into a home and exiting with a large flat screen TV and food from the refrigerator. When I asked the 15 year old pictured sitting on the back of the car why he broke into the house, he responded that he had a baby at home and was trying to get some money to feed him.
This is why we need programs like a Boys & Girls Club and other initiatives that can positively impact our young people. It makes no sense to me why anyone is opposed when scenes like this play out everyday in our City. I had a very productive meeting yesterday afternoon with the President of Rowan Cabarrus Community College and two of her Vice Presidents.
We discussed implementing a program in partnership with the County Commission that would assist with those unemployed or underemployed on the West End. I was impressed with their presentation and told them that if we pulled other programs into one initiative, we could make a big difference on the West End and other areas of the County they identified. I found Dr. Spaulding and the two VP’s, Dr. Michael Quillen and Craig Lamb, to be sincere in their efforts. I agreed to work closely with them on this effort.
