♦ Rowan County Sheriff’s Office sources reported an armed robbery took place early Thursday morning at the Pilot Travel Center (Formerly the Wilco-Hess) at 985 Peeler Road in Salisbury. The Sheriff’s Office was alerted at 3:17 a.m. A light skinned Hispanic male, attired in all black, entered the convenience store from the rear door and tossed a backpack on the counter. While he held one hand inside his coat as if holding a gun, he commanded the female clerk to fill his backpack with money. The clerk followed his instructions, but managed to trigger a silent alarm. With his backpack brimming with $1,216 cash from the registers, the robber headed out the rear door and vanished into the morning darkness on his way to I-85.
Did he have a real gun or was it a classic con job? We might never know. Witnesses on the truck lot failed to notice the man coming or going. Rowan County Sheriff’s Office combed the area, but the robber was nowhere to be found. Tonight he will count his money. Thankfully no one was harmed this time out.
The robber obscured his face with a black bandanna and is said to stand approximately 5’10 and weighed a solid 180 lbs. Perhaps viewing the security cam videos will prove fruitful.
