Dear Sirs,

Past administrations, the current administration, the Congress of the United States and the Supreme Court are driving us towards an age of “soft tyranny” in which the government does not shatter men’s wills but “softens, bends, and guides” them.
If we do nothing to halt these abuses, we run the risk of becoming, as Alexis de Tocquevill warned in 1840, nothing more than “a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd.” (Alexis de Tocqueville, Democracy in America, 1840)

The Constitution provides a remedy to a run away government, “THE POWER OF THE STATES.” Article V of the Constitution authorizes the state legislatures to call a convention for the limited purpose of proposing amendments to the Constitution.

Pay close attention to Article 5 of the U.S. Constitution.

The Constitution of the United States
* * * * * * * * * *
Article V
The Congress, whenever two thirds of both houses shall deem it necessary, shall propose amendments to this Constitution, or, on the application of the legislatures of two thirds of the several states, shall call a convention for proposing amendments, which, in either case, shall be valid to all intents and purposes, as part of this Constitution, when ratified by the legislatures of three fourths of the several states, or by conventions in three fourths thereof, as the one or the other mode of ratification may be proposed by the Congress; provided that no amendment which may be made prior to the year one thousand eight hundred and eight shall in any manner affect the first and fourth clauses in the ninth section of the first article; and that no state, without its consent, shall be deprived of its equal suffrage in the Senate.

Gentlemen, you are the answer to the runaway, tyrannical federal government. I support this approach. I want [name of your State] to be one of the necessary 34 states that passes a resolution calling for a Convention of the States. You can find a copy of the draft resolution and a legislator’s handbook (which briefly explains the process and answers many questions) at http://www.conventionofstates.com.

Now is the time for men of courage to stand and fight to protect our Republic. Now is not the time to fold to political pressure or to put the desire of reelection ahead of the desire to make the hard choices.
You will be remembered in history as being one of the brave men who faced tyranny head on or you will be remembered as one of those who allowed the Republic to perish. The choice is yours. The people of Rowan will support you if you choose wisely.
