Although the County Commissioner candidate debate was very interesting, I was a bit puzzled by candidate Roueche’s views. His statement that, “You only have so many tax dollars to use. The (school board) is responsible for using those tax dollars to the best of their abilities,” was right on target. However, his follow-up statement that, “Revenues need to be increased to support educational needs” suggests that he believes there is no limit to the dollars available for the school system. Either that or you can have your cake and eat it too.
I note he also avoided the “T” word. However, since he cannot force an increase in lottery sales or an increase in sales tax income, the only revenue stream that would “be available to support educational needs” is a property tax increase. Using this philosophy, there would be no limit on the amount of tax dollars available “to support educational needs”. When juxtaposed, his positions seem to be contradictory. Either ”You only have so many tax dollars to use” or you don’t.
Hmmm, am I missing something here?
