Scuffling Over Money in Salisbury, Father Allegedly Chokes Daughter and Daughter Allegedly Cuts Daddy with a Kitchen Knife Thursday

♦  At least nobody got shot Thursday in tank town Salisbury.  At the nearest level of violence was the Salisbury police report that Steven Jay Goodman, 63, of 900 Fairmount Avenue, Salisbury and his daughter Monica Goodman Grubb, 30, listed at the same address, got into a scrap over money likely the number one cause of all domestic disputes.  The argument, based on $3 dollars that the father refused to fork over, allegedly escalated into Mr. Goodman choking his daughter and Mrs. Grubb allegedly nicking her father’s hand with a kitchen knife.

According to police sources Mr. Goodman walked away from the argument and disappeared into his bedroom.  The daughter allegedly followed him to the bedroom door and hammered on it.  When Mr. Goodman finally answered, he allegedly grabbed his daughter by the neck and shoved her away.

In a typical domestic dispute “he said–she said” the two contestants disagreed over what occurred.  Goodman maintains he did not choke his daughter and Mrs. Grubb disputes his claim.

After the bedroom confrontation, Mrs. Grubb allegedly grabbed a knife out of the kitchen and sliced her father on his hand.  The incident was said to have happened with Grubb’s two children in the house as well as Sandra Goodman, 62.

Steven Goodman was charged with assault (misdemeanor) and was issued a written promise to appear in court on June 1st.

Mrs. Grubb was charged with assault with a deadly weapon or assault inflicting serious injury (misdemeanor).  Under a secured bond of $1,000, Mrs. Grubb was detained in the Rowan County Detention Center and later released on bail.

Life is short.  Scrapping over $3 bucks ain’t worth it.  Wonder what the two contestants will think about this incident 5 years from now when they look back at it.

Todd Paris, Staff Writer and Salisbury Attorney

♦ We know many Rowan-Salisbury School System parents are perplexed by their children coming home with Superintendent Lynn Moody’s new Apple I-Pads or Apple Mac Air laptops with homework that must be done only on the internet. If you as a parent, have stuck in a low paying job or are unemployed or underemployed how you do afford to have internet at home? Are you too busy working subsistence second and third shift jobs to drive your kids all the way into Salisbury to McDonald’s for free Wi-Fi or (get carjacked in the lot?).

Help may be coming from an unlikely source.  Charter (Now America’s 2nd largest cable providers) has recently been cleared to buy Time-Warner Cable and as part of the deal, has agreed to offer 30 Mbps of broadband for $14.99 per month for low income users. Applicants must prove they qualify for the National School Lunch program. At last check, that was about half the county. Also note that seniors over 65 and who qualify for Social Security are eligible as well!

Here’s the link to the Charter’s 14.99 bargain high-speed internet (Hey you can watch YouTube, Netflix, and Hulu with no buffering at 30 Mbps)

Many concerned parents contacted the RFP about this event.  They believe the Rowan-Salisbury School System requires stronger anti-bullying programs and administrative oversight.  A young man nearly lost his life that day because his brain was oxygen deprived.

Shots Fired into an Occupied Home on the Corner of Old Plank Road and Wilson Street in Salisbury, N.C.

Todd Paris, Staff Writer and Salisbury Attorney

♦ Around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday morning Brandon Lee Barker, a veteran of  Iraqi Freedom, 4th Infantry Division and who lives with his wife and four children on Old Plank Road, was looking out the window at his vehicles (they were recently broken into) when he was startled by 4 or 5 gunshots coming from an area around the duplex next door at 1005 Old Plank Road. Brandon called for his wife to hand him his pistol.  Armed now, he advanced, as he was trained, towards trouble to see if anyone was “down” and to get a description of perpetrators.

The duplex next door had a troubled past.  In that building some folks moved out of the front apartment a few weeks back. Soon after Raleigh Bail Enforcement Agents showed up looking for one of the occupants. The couple in the rear apartment has a baby and another child.  Brandon spoke to the father who told him the couple’s bedroom window got shot out. Brandon described the family as  a nice young couple and wonders if this act wasn’t random or possibly directed at the folks who moved out.  Freda Renee Carr, 45, spoke to the arriving police.

When the Salisbury Police arrived some 15 minutes later, Brandon told them what he knew.

Brandon, his wife and four children rent a modest, though well kept home next door. They are considering making an offer on the house. However, he’s concerned about crime in this area behind Livingstone’s football stadium that he and a few friends from his firearm’s club named; “North Carolina Elite Freedom Shooters” sometimes patrol the neighborhood at night with his dog “Ivan.”

Brandon, Ivan and club member Casey Cofer.

Lest anyone label them vigilantes, Brandon is working on a Masters Degree in Criminal Justice and Homeland Security and knows well the legal limitations as to what his group can do. By law they are limited to witnessing, reporting and discouraging crime. If you see a sidearm here or there it’s just for personal protection should they become engaged by the gunfire that’s all too common these days in Salisbury. While Ivan the dog projects a fearsome appearance, out on patrol the neighborhood kids love the dog and often run up to pet him.

Brandon expressed his concern with the under-staffed, under-paid Salisbury Police Department and complains that on crimes he reports that “they seldom contact me.” He is aware he could be hurt or killed during these citizen patrols. He said that getting killed at home these days is just as likely.

Letter-to-the-Editor: Our Grand Daughter was Taken from Us this Weekend by Bacterial Meningitis

♦ Rick Johnson, Salisbury, N.C

Our grand daughter Nicole Johnson was taken from us this weekend by bacterial meningitis.

Nicole is no longer a part of this world. She has been called home and we are left behind in stunned silence.

Crying out to God in anger provides very little comfort. Drowning is despair is of little use.

I must face the future with strength and dignity to help comfort others around me.

There is no rhyme or reason that will ever make sense of this gut wrenching loss other than, God is always good and I am too shortsighted to see it.

Friend, when we meet, you do not need to struggle to find the right words to say because there are none.

Just a hand shake and friendship is all that matter for me.

Please focus your prayers here towards Kendall, Miriam, Lucas and the grand parents.

Abiding by the “Castle Doctrine”, an N.C. Home Protection Law with Teeth, a Man Allegedly Shoots Attacker in Rowan County

♦ Wednesday about 10 p.m. an unidentified man, abiding by the “Castle Doctrine”, an N.C. law for defending your home, vehicles, and your work place, allegedly stood his ground and shot Jesse Dean Ciancimino who allegedly attacked him in Eastern Rowan County.

The unidentified shooter, living on the 100 block of South Long Street, was relaxing on his porch when he spotted Ciancimino,31, tooling up and down his street in a car and yelling out the window.  Puzzled by the stranger’s behavior, the man who lived there stepped partially out of the door and onto the porch.

Ciancimino pulled his car over, climbed out, and started walking toward the man in the doorway. When Ciancimino arrived at the glass door, he pulled it open and punched him the head. Instants later the man in the doorway drew a handgun and shot Ciancimino in the leg. Startled, he hollered at the shooter.

A neighbor and the shooter’s wife tried to tend the wounded man, now laying on the ground, as best they could until Rowan County EMS showed up and the Sheriff’s deputies arrived.

Ciancimino was transported to the hospital. His leg wound was alleged to be minor. Nothing accounted for Ciancimino’s alleged loud and aggressive behavior.

No charges were filed for this case as yet.

The case remains under investigation even though sheriff’s office deputies believe the shooter was within the law provided by the Castle Doctrine:
