RFP Staff
♦ With all the shootings, break-ins, assaults, drug dealing, gang activity, and senseless killings going on in Salisbury and in some of its neighboring municipalities, the very last thing Salisbury needs is an understaffed and underpaid police department. The Rowan Free Press has been receiving a heads-up in the last several weeks about key police staff leaving the department for better paying law enforcement agencies like our Sheriff’s Office, Charlotte-Meck police, and private agencies like Norfolk Southern Railroad. It appears the Salisbury Police Department has become a temporary training ground for young officers who want better careers elsewhere. This has created a serious challenge for a city under siege.
What does City Hall need to do in order to keep its police officers on board? Is it pay? Staff morale? The daily risks inherent in working in a high violent crime rate area?
It’s not working and our police department is stretched dangerously thin at one of the very worst times in Salisbury’s recent history. Not only is the lack of police a threat to residents lives and property, it also puts a damper on economic development and in keeping people from wanting to live here or even remain.
