RFP Staff/Squat Salisbury
♦ The newly opened “Harbor Freight Tools”, at 705 E. Innes Street in Salisbury, N.C. is more than just a retailer of hardy, yet inexpensive Chinese tools, it is the backbone supplier Salisbury’s growing legion of mobile squatters dwelling in “tarp utopias” all over Salisbury. Perhaps you’ve stumbled across these humble villages in wooded areas along the Town Creek or a stone’s throw from the Comfort Inn. Others tarp utopias blend in among the woods near forgotten waste sites and abandon industrial buildings.
Salisbury’s tarp cities are constructed by those who don’t care to mix with the city’s many homeless at more regimented shelters like Rowan Helping Ministries or halfway houses seeded throughout the Bury. Some folks like the freedom to come and go as they please and not have to answer to meaningless rules. It is frequently said by those who enjoy tarp city lifestyles: “If I wanted to blow off my freedom, I’d have saddled up again with the Army.”
No doubt the most frequently employed tarp in any “tarp utopia” is Harbor Freight Tools (HBT) 19′ x 19′ heavy duty water resistant tarp. It’s almost always on sale both in HBT stores and on line.
Below are photographs of tarp encampments universally found in down-in-the-heels small and midsized municipalities such as Salisbury:
