♦ At approximately 7:20 p.m. Friday night I arrived at Unit 21 of the Weant Street Apartments on Grant Street in East Spencer on the report of a shooting. Jerome Collins, a Salisbury resident, was shot in the head and face. His wounds are said to be superficial and not life threatening. Collins was transported by EMS to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem for treatment. Mr. Collins last appeared in the RFP when his ex-girlfriend sprayed him in the face with roach killer.

Jerome Van Collins:
East Spencer Police Chief Sharon Hovis provided a brief, but detailed interview informing us that Mr. Collins was uncooperative and combative with her officers. She noted Mr. Collins was banned previously from the Weant Street Apartments during a prior arrest.
East Spencer Police Chief Sharon Hovis:
Location Weant Street Apartments, Grant Street and Weant Streets, East Spencer, N.C.
The East Spencer Police, under Chief Hovis, has lowered East Spencer’s crime rate to the point East Spencer owns a far lower crime rate than Salisbury. Her officers are well-trained, efficient, and are noted for their rapid response. Chief Hovis is well known to her community and is said to walk up to porches and talk to young people identified as gang members.
We should mention that the Spencer Police Department showed up to support the East Spencer Police Department.
The East Spencer Police has no openings for police officers at this time. Like neighboring Spencer, the officers here are satisfied, loyal, and remain. The credit is given to Hovis’s outstanding leadership and their excellent pay.
