♦ The East Innes Street Post Office was evacuated around 1:20 p.m. and nearby streets were blocked off in Downtown Salisbury due to precautions being taken over a suspicious package spotted by a postal clerk.  According to Salisbury Police Department and area pedestrians an alert postal clerk stopped a female from opening a package when something suspicious appeared.  The package had no return address.  As a precautionary measure the building was rapidly evacuated and the police were summoned. A Rowan County Sheriff’s Office bomb-sniffing dog was brought to the scene and the Cabarrus County Bomb Squad, the area’s chief bomb squad, was alerted. Postal inspectors are on the scene.  The Salisbury Fire Department is nearby as a precaution.  TV-news helicopters are being diverted from  the area.  Area traffic is being diverted, leading to congestion elsewhere in Salisbury.  A large Cabarrus Bomb Squad truck is at the Post Office.  East Innes is blocked off for vehicular traffic.

All clear.  Traffic is permitted again in the area.  Package was neutralized.  No official announcement yet on what was contained in the package.

This story will be updated.
